RED ROCK PARK

Red Rock Park is easy to find, Travel 7 miles east on old Route 66 out of town and you will see signs for the park.  While you are there, marvel at the beauty of the red rocks and Church rock in the distance. With the exception of the parades, the majority of the events take place at Red Rock Park.  There are several arenas and sometimes events are concurrent.

FROM RED ROCK PARK:  

Red Rock Park is pleased to host the 97th. Year of the Gallup Indian Ceremonial,  August 3 – 12, 2018. Along with the various scheduled Ceremonial events, RRP offers visitors a choice of camping venues, from tent camping to RV and the largest of motor coaches at the East & West campground areas. Campground amenities include bathroom/shower facilities, the old Red Rock Trading Post store, and the Church Rock Post Office. Visitors are encouraged to call the park office (505-722-3839) for campsite availability.

For those seeking a backcountry experience, the Church Rock & Pyramid Trails  present the hiker with jaunts of 1.5 & 1.7 miles respectively, or a 4.5 mile loop trail with a Pyramid Peak summit elevation of 7,487 ft. .The panoramic views of the Burlington Northern/Santa Fe Railroad line, Gallup to the West and the canyons to the North, Chuska Mountains of the Navajo Nation to the Northwest, and Ft. Wingate site & Zuni Mountains to the South/East, are a sight to behold.

Equally so, the High Desert Trail System (10 miles West) & the Zuni Mt. Trail System (15 miles Southeast) provide the intrepid mountain-biker with thrills and vistas alike.  

At the Red Rock Park Museum, visitors are offered a cultural perspective of those who came before, with exhibits of life from 9000-5000 BC and extending to the later westward movement via the Mother Road/US 66. Individual exhibits include cultural artifacts of the Anasazi, the recording of Reservation Life from black & white photos of the 1950’s, the Kachina Dolls of the Zuni Nation, pottery & basketry of the pueblo people, Navajo weavings & sand-paintings, Pueblo & Navajo jewelry, and a chronicle of early Native Peoples and 1800’s white settlers to the Gallup area through the Wooden Sculpture Collection of Robert Mincks.

Red Rock Park also provides a staging point for those wishing to visit Chaco Canyon National Historic Park/90 miles Northeast, Mesa Verde National Park/150 miles North, Canyon de Chelly National Monument/130 miles Northwest, Petrified Forest National Park/65 miles West, Zuni Pueblo/35 miles Southwest, El Morro National Monument/45 miles South, or El Malpais National Monument/55 miles Southeast. 

Closer to home and for those wishing for indoor excitement, the bright lights & sounds of the Navajo Nation Fire Rock Casino are a mere 1.5 miles from Red Rock Park on the US 66 frontage road. Westward on old 66 leads you to the historic El Rancho Hotel, gallery & restaurant of the BNSF Train Station, the downtown Gallup Murals, the El Morro Theatre, and various downtown traders and galleries.
